Visit Official ACTFL SiteACTFL assessments are widely utilized by corporate hiring departments in the United States and South Korea (specifically major electronics and automotive conglomerates), as well as governmental bodies and translation services to certify practical spoken conversational capacity.
The computer-based OPIc uses an avatar named "Ava". The adaptive software generates questions based on your background survey. In the middle of the test, Ava will present a multi-part roleplay task.
Ava: "Imagine you want to buy tickets to a concerts next month. Call the box office and ask three or four questions about the ticket prices, seating options, and booking process."
The OPI is a live 20-minute phone call with an interviewer, whilst the OPIc is a 40-minute automated computer test. Both tests adapt their difficulty level dynamically based on your initial self-assessment and answers.
Ava will welcome you and ask you to introduce yourself. Then, she will choose topics based on your pre-test survey interests.
You must describe your home, your workplace or school, and answer questions about your selected hobbies (e.g. travel, sports, cinema).
Ava will present a two-part roleplay task. In the first part, you must call a business or friend and ask for information about a plan.
In the second part, Ava will present an unexpected complication (e.g. the ticket shop is closed, or your car broke down). You must explain the problem politely and offer two viable solutions.
The final phase tests your advanced linguistic capacity. Ava will ask abstract comparison questions or raise complex social concerns.
For example, you may be asked to compare technology usage across generations, or outline the environmental impact of local industries.

ACTFL grades you using four major levels: Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Superior. Advanced speakers must describe and narrate in all time frames (past, present, future) without major errors.
Can you speak in full paragraphs, linking your sentences smoothly? Higher ratings require sustained, cohesive speech rather than short, fragmented sentences.
Your speech must be easily understood by native speakers who are not accustomed to dealing with language learners. Pronunciation and vocabulary choices must be precise.
To reach the 'Superior' rating, you must show you can discuss abstract theories, state hypotheses, and support arguments about complex global concerns.
The OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) is a live 1-on-1 telephone interview with a certified human examiner. The OPIc (Oral Proficiency Interview by computer) is an on-screen internet test where you converse with a virtual avatar named 'Ava'.
Before the test begins, you complete a Background Survey about your job, living situation, and interests (hobbies, sports, travel). The test's adaptive system then selects custom questions based directly on your interests.
Official ACTFL ratings are valid for exactly two years from the date of the test, in line with corporate standards in the US and South Korea.
