Who is this exam for?

Eiken is Japan's national English benchmark, taken by over 4 million students each year to earn entry into prestigious high schools and universities. The second stage of the test is a highly structured face-to-face 1-on-1 interview card reading.

Try a Sample Task

In Eiken Grade Pre-1 and Grade 2, the examiner will hand you a "Question Card". You must read a short passage and describe a 3-panel or 4-panel story to the examiner. Here is an authentic sample layout.

Eiken Pre-1 Question Card

Passage: Healthier School Lunches
Recently, many schools in Japan have started to change their lunch menus. These schools serve organic vegetables and traditional dishes. By doing so, they hope to encourage children to learn about traditional food culture and develop healthier eating habits from a young age.
Panel 1: A headteacher introducing organic lunches to students.
Panel 2: Children smiling and eating healthy traditional meals.
Panel 3: A mother talking to her child about organic food at home.

You have 20 seconds to read the passage silently, then you will be asked to read it aloud and explain the story in the panels starting with: "One day, a headteacher..."

Speaking Test Structure

The interview takes between 5 and 10 minutes depending on the Grade. It is sat in a private room with one examiner. Your manners, posture, and politeness (known as Attitude) are graded along with your English vocabulary and pronunciation.

Part 1: Reading Aloud

1 - 2 Minutes

The examiner will ask you to read the short, printed passage on your Question Card aloud.

You must focus on clear pronunciation, linking words naturally, and raising your voice at the end of questions or lowering it at periods.

Pro Tip: If you see a difficult word, do not freeze or pause! Make a guess, speak clearly, and keep going. Examiners value smooth flow much more than a single mispronounced syllable.

Part 2: Passage & Picture Description

2 - 3 Minutes

First, the examiner will ask you one direct comprehension question about the passage (e.g. "According to the passage, why are schools changing their menus?").

Next, you will have 1 minute to prepare a short narrative describing the sequence of pictures on the card. You must use past continuous and past simple tenses to explain what the people are doing and thinking.

Pro Tip: For Pre-1, use speech bubbles in the panels to describe the people's feelings. For example: "The boy was thinking that the traditional meal looked very delicious."

Part 3: Personal Opinion Questions

3 - 4 Minutes

The examiner will ask you to hand back the Question Card and will ask you two or three general opinion questions related to the core topic of the card.

For example, you might be asked: "Do you think schools should ban sugary snacks?" or "Should families eat dinner together every day?" You must state your opinion and back it up with two clear reasons.

Pro Tip: Start your answer with "I think so" or "I don't think so" to give yourself a clear starting point. Then, structure your arguments using transition words like "First" and "Second".
