Who is this exam for?

ESOL Skills for Life (QCF/RQF) is a popular UK regulated qualification for adult residents in the UK who need to improve their English skills for work, daily life, citizenship applications, or higher education courses.

Try a Sample Task

For the Entry 3 and Level 1 exams, you must prepare a "Topic Form" before you enter the room. The examiner will choose points from your form to start a conversation. Here is an authentic sample layout.

Entry 3 Topic Form

Title of Topic: My Job as a Delivery Driver

Discussion Points:
  • How I use GPS maps to navigate the local area
  • My daily routine and shift hours
  • Meeting different customers every day
  • The challenges of heavy traffic in my city

The examiner will ask you to introduce your topic. You must talk continuously about your points and answer their follow-up questions naturally.

Speaking Test Structure

The speaking and listening component takes 10 to 15 minutes. It is conducted face-to-face with a certified UK assessor. At higher levels (Entry 3, Level 1, and Level 2), you may sit the exam alongside one other candidate to complete interactive tasks.

Part 1: Conversational Exchange

3 - 4 Minutes

The assessor will greet you and ask standard questions about your daily life in the UK. Topics include your hobbies, shopping habits, transportation, or plans for the weekend.

You must answer clearly in complete sentences and show you can use tenses (past, present, future) appropriate for your level.

Pro Tip: Do not just say "Yes" or "No". Expand on your answers by explaining *why*. For example: "I like living in London because there are many beautiful parks to visit with my children."

Part 2: Prepared Topic Talk

4 - 5 Minutes

You hand your prepared Topic Form to the assessor. You will deliver a short presentation (around 2 minutes) covering the points on your form.

Following your talk, the assessor will ask you follow-up questions to test your comprehension and ability to explain your ideas in detail.

Pro Tip: Do not memorise a script! Assesors can easily spot recited text and will interrupt you with unexpected questions to check if you can hold a natural, spontaneous conversation.

Part 3: Interactive Paired Task

4 - 5 Minutes

You will work with another candidate (or the assessor) to complete a practical, real-world task based on a prompt card (e.g. planning a class party or deciding on a gift for a teacher).

You must share suggestions, listen to your partner, negotiate options, and come to an agreement.

Pro Tip: You are graded heavily on cooperation. Ask for your partner's opinions using welcoming phrases like "What do you think?" or "Do you agree with that suggestion?"
