Who is this exam for?

The oral Matura is a compulsory school-leaving examination taken face-to-face by high school students in Poland. Achieving a high score is essential for secondary school graduation and university admission applications.

Try a Matura Roleplay Prompt

In Task 1 of the oral Matura, you must interact with the examiner in a simulated roleplay based on key points. Here is a realistic practice prompt.

Task 1: Situational Roleplay (Zadanie 1)

Scenario: Booking a Language Course
"You are studying in the UK and want to join an intensive language course. You are discussing options with the school administrator (played by the examiner)..."

You must cover the following four points during the dialogue:
  • Explain why you want to take the course and state your target level.
  • Inquire about the duration, schedule, and weekly shift hours.
  • Ask about accommodation options (e.g. host family or student residence).
  • Negotiate a discount or ask about instalment payment options.

Speaking Test Structure

The face-to-face oral exam takes about 15 minutes. There is no separate preparation time; candidates must respond spontaneously to the examiner's prompts across three distinct tasks.

Task 1: Situational Roleplay

3 - 4 Minutes

You interact with the examiner in a simulated everyday scenario. You are given a card containing four bullet points that you must actively cover during the dialogue.

You must react naturally to the examiner's questions, lead the conversation, and ensure all points are resolved.

Pro Tip: Do not just list the points. React dynamically to what the examiner says! If they reject your initial discount request, suggest an alternative option like a monthly payment plan.

Task 2: Picture Description & Questions

3 - 4 Minutes

You are shown an illustration or photo (e.g. people in a park or working in an office). You must describe the photo, covering **who** is in it, **what** they are doing, and **where** they are.

Following your description, the examiner will ask you three standard follow-up questions to test your interpretive ability.

Pro Tip: Use present continuous for actions! Mention details in the background and foreground, and use speculative phrasing like "it seems like they are enjoying themselves."

Task 3: Stimulus Choice & Justification

5 Minutes

You are shown two or three visual options (e.g. posters for a charity campaign or locations for a trip). You must choose the best option and explain **why** you chose it.

You must also explain **why** you rejected the other options. The examiner will then ask you two follow-up questions about the theme.

Pro Tip: Spend time describing why you rejected the other options. Explaining drawbacks (e.g. "this option is too formal and won't appeal to young people") demonstrates excellent comparative vocabulary.
