PTE is entirely computer-based. The most notorious task is 'Describe Image', where you must verbally analyze a complex graph in just 40 seconds.
Look at the graph below. In 25 seconds, please speak into the microphone and describe in detail what the graph is showing.

The Speaking section is bundled with Writing and takes 54-67 minutes. You will sit in a testing center wearing a headset. There are five distinct speaking task types you must master.
Read Aloud: A short paragraph will appear on your screen. You have 30-40 seconds to prepare, and then the microphone will open. You must read the text aloud as naturally and clearly as possible. The AI is listening for your rhythm, stress, and pronunciation.
Repeat Sentence: You will hear an audio recording of a single sentence. Immediately after the audio finishes, you must repeat the sentence exactly as you heard it. This tests your listening comprehension and short-term memory.
An image (a bar chart, line graph, map, diagram, or photo) will appear on the screen. You are given 25 seconds to analyze the image and identify the main features.
Once the beep sounds, you have 40 seconds to verbally describe the key information. You do not need to read every single number; the AI wants to hear you identify the title, the highest/lowest points, and a general conclusion.
Re-tell Lecture: You will listen to or watch a short academic lecture. You must take notes on your erasable booklet. Afterwards, you have 10 seconds to prepare, and then 40 seconds to verbally summarize the main points of the lecture in your own words.
Answer Short Question: You will hear a simple general knowledge question (e.g., "What do you call the organ that pumps blood through the body?"). You must reply with a single word or a very short phrase (e.g., "The heart").

Pearson's automated scoring engine (SpeechRater) evaluates your spoken English. Human examiners will never hear your voice. The AI judges you on three core parameters.
This is arguably the most important metric for the AI. Fluency measures your rhythm, phrasing, and stress. The AI expects a smooth, effortless flow of speech. Hesitations, false starts (starting a sentence, stopping, and restarting), and long silences will drastically lower your score. Speak at a constant, natural pace.
The AI assesses whether your speech is easily understandable to a regular English speaker. It checks if you are pronouncing vowels and consonants correctly, and if you are using word-level and sentence-level stress accurately. You do not need a native accent, but you must enunciate clearly.
This measures if your response is relevant to the prompt. Did you use the correct keywords from the graph? Did you repeat the correct words from the sentence? While important, many tutors suggest that sacrificing a little bit of content is acceptable if it allows you to maintain perfect Oral Fluency.
The PTE Academic is entirely scored by advanced AI algorithms, not human examiners. The AI heavily rewards oral fluency (speaking smoothly without hesitation) and clear pronunciation. Hesitating, self-correcting, or long pauses will severely penalize your score.
No, you do not interact with a human examiner. You will take the test in a secure test center, speaking into a headset microphone while looking at a computer screen.
Speaking is bundled together with the Writing section in Part 1 of the exam. The combined Speaking and Writing section takes approximately 54 to 67 minutes to complete.
