PTE

The Speaking section of the PTE Academic exam evaluates candidates' ability to communicate effectively in spoken English. It assesses their pronunciation, intonation, grammar, vocabulary, and ability to convey information clearly and coherently. The Speaking test is computer-based and consists of several question types, each designed to measure different aspects of the candidate's speaking skills. Let's break down each part of the Speaking test:

1

Part 1

In the Read Aloud task, candidates are presented with a short text on the computer screen. The text could be a sentence, a phrase, or a brief paragraph. Candidates are given some time to preview the text before they start reading. Once they begin, the microphone automatically records their voice. The challenge is to read the text aloud fluently and accurately, paying attention to pronunciation and intonation. The Read Aloud task assesses the candidate's ability to read and pronounce words correctly and with appropriate stress.

2

Part 2

In the Repeat Sentence task, candidates listen to a sentence played through the audio. They need to repeat the sentence exactly as they heard it. This task evaluates the candidate's listening and speaking skills. It tests their ability to grasp spoken English and reproduce it accurately. Candidates should focus on clarity and enunciation while repeating the sentences.

Part 3

In the Describe Image task, candidates are shown an image, which could be a graph, chart, map, or picture. They have a limited time to study the image and identify its key points or trends. Then, they must describe the image in their own words. This task assesses the candidate's ability to organize and present information coherently and concisely. It also tests their vocabulary range and grammar usage.

4

Part 4

The Retell Lecture task evaluates the candidate's listening and speaking skills. Candidates listen to a short lecture or part of a lecture and then must retell the information they heard. This task assesses their ability to comprehend and recall information from an academic context. Candidates should focus on summarizing the main points and conveying them logically and accurately.

5

Part 5

In the Answer Short Question task, candidates hear a brief question and must respond with a short, concise answer. The questions can cover various topics and are designed to test the candidate's ability to give prompt and relevant responses.

6

Part 6

The Summarise Spoken Text task involves listening to a longer audio recording, usually a lecture or presentation, and then writing a summary of the content. Candidates have a limited time to complete their written response. This task assesses their listening, comprehension, and writing skills, along with their ability to extract the main ideas from an academic talk.
