Who is this exam for?

Trinity ISE is an internationally recognised, multi-skills qualification widely accepted for UK visa applications (SELT), university admissions, and professional registration. It is popular with candidates aiming to verify academic English capability.

Try a Collaborative Task

In Trinity ISE II and ISE III, the examiner will read a short dilemma. You must take control of the conversation, ask questions to clarify the problem, and give advice. Here is an authentic practice prompt.

Collaborative Task Dilemma (ISE II / B2)

Examiner's Prompt:
"A close friend of mine wants to change careers and start a completely new business, but they have no experience in this field and very little savings. They have asked for my advice on what to do..."

Your Interactive Directives:
  • Ask open questions to discover more details (e.g. business type, alternative plans).
  • Do not give immediate generic advice; wait until you have gathered facts.
  • Express your own views on the risks involved and share constructive options.
  • Invite the examiner to comment on your suggestions to keep it a two-way discussion.

Speaking Test Structure

The interview takes 10 to 12 minutes depending on the target level (ISE I, II, or III). Unlike standard conversational exams, the candidate is required to proactively drive and lead the interactive phases.

Part 1: Topic Presentation Talk

4 Minutes

You must prepare a topic of your choice before the exam. You will deliver a 4-minute presentation using a visual topic map or brief outline notes.

Following your presentation, the examiner will ask you interactive questions to discuss your chosen points in more detail.

Pro Tip: Avoid simple personal descriptions. Prepare a topic with debate potential or interesting arguments so you can demonstrate advanced discursive structures and opinion phrasing.

Part 2: Collaborative Discussion

4 Minutes (ISE II & III)

The examiner will read a short, open-ended dilemma. You must lead the discussion. You are expected to ask details, define the issue, and help the examiner evaluate solutions.

The examiner will only answer your questions and will not help you drive the conversation. You must keep the exchange moving naturally.

Pro Tip: This is not a presentation! If you talk continuously without asking the examiner questions, you will lose marks. Use active listening cues: "Why do you think they want to change careers now?"

Part 3: Discursive Conversation

2 - 3 Minutes

A spontaneous, natural conversation based on a subject area selected by the examiner from a set list of topics (e.g. community projects, technology, travel, or personal development).

You must show you can participate in a mature discussion, justify your opinions, and interact productively.

Pro Tip: Practise conversational transitions. Linking your thoughts to what the examiner says shows excellent high-level interactive control.
