Master the speaking sections of Turkish university English preparatory proficiency exams (Bilkent PAE, METU EPE, ITU Proficiency, and others). Bypass hazirlik school with confidence.
Designed for newly admitted university students in Turkey preparing for preparatory school exemption exams (Hazırlık Atlama/Muafiyet Sınavları), specifically the Bilkent PAE and METU EPE.
Proficiency tests assess your ability to deliver a logical, structured argument on academic topics. Try this sample METU-style monologue.
Exemption tests differ by university. Below are the outlines of the two most prominent university proficiency exams in Turkey.
Consists of two stages: Stage 1 is warm-up questions (hobbies, education plans). Stage 2 is a detailed debate/opinion task where the examiner challenges your claims.
Consists of an academic monologue. You draw a topic card, spend one minute sketching a skeleton outline, and record your speech.
A clear beginning, middle, and end. Stating your thesis early and using formal logical connectors to transition between arguments.
Using academic collocations and formal nouns (e.g. *mitigate, implementation, advocate*) instead of conversational slang.
Displaying compound-complex sentences, passive sentences for academic objectivity, and conditional reasoning.
Steady intonation, clear articulation, and natural phrasing without repetitive filler words like "uhm" or "like".
The PAE (Practice in Advanced English) speaking test evaluates a student's ability to debate academic topics in an oral interview with two examiners.
The METU EPE evaluates candidates on academic monologues. Students are given a card with a prompt, outline their ideas, and speak for 2-3 minutes.
You must score above the university's threshold (typically 60% or 70% overall, with minimum speaking caps) to bypass preparatory English classes and start your first-year department courses.
